Traditions bring people together. With Christmas fast approaching, I’d like to share one of my Christmas traditions with you, and wish you a very merry holiday season.
Traditions that carry on through generations preserve the past and help keep our ancestors’ stories alive. Innately, we all want to be part of something. Family traditions can give us that sense of belonging. The holidays are a great time to reconnect with friends and family, reflect over the year that has passed, and plan for the year to come.
A Christmas tradition my Haligonian family enjoys is gingerbread house competitions. There are two events, one for the kids, and one for the nineteen and older crowd. Teams of two are paired up randomly from a hat and judged by a neighbour to keep it real. We compete for cool prizes! It’s fun and interactive, and results in festive, delicious, edible décor for all ages to enjoy from start to finish.
Whatever your traditions are, doing it together is what is important. Keep them going. And it is never too late to start new ones for the next generation to enjoy and embrace.
Happy Holidays from my family’s gingerbread house to yours!
